Picasso’s ‘Guernica’.

This iconic anti-war masterpiece by Picasso depicts the bombing of the Spanish village of Guernica by the German and Italian war planes during the Spanish Civil War at the request of the Spanish Nationalists. Over 7m long [app 25 feet] and about 3.5m high [app 11 feet], it is one of the most moving and inspirational representations of its type and remains so today.

In World War Two, it is said that Picasso was often harassed by the Gestapo and during a search of his apartment a Gestapo officer saw a photograph of  the Guernica painting. “Did you do that” the officer asked. “No” replied Picasso, “You did”. A retort in itself almost as powerful and disarming as his Guernica painting that in a way puts into words what is conveyed within this masterpiece. Picasso’s Guernica oil painting is exhibited at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte, Rein Sofia, Madrid. www.museoreinsofia.es
